My Albums of 2012 – No. 9: Chairlift ‘Something’

chairlift

From what I had previously heard of Chairlift, I believed them to be everything that Hot Chip have been wrongly accused of being: a trio of hipsters, ruining perfectly good pop songs by ironically winking their way through them. Maybe it was down to the departure of co-founder Aaron Pfenning, or the arrival of producer Dan Carey (Hot Chip, La Roux), but this album was as good a straight-forward pop album as your were likely to hear all year.

From the pulsating opening track, ‘Sidewalk Safari’, through the gargantuan chorus of ‘I Belong In Your Arms’, to the sumptuous morning-after haze of ‘Cool As A Fire’, this was a stunning set of songs. After a year distinctly lacking in great pop records, re-listening to this album before this write up, was a gloriously giddy rush.
